🙊 AIN’T NO WAY
Area Woman “Plays Possum” and Escapes Marauding Trash Can Panda. 🐼
In a dramatic showdown between suburban bravery and a hungry raccoon, local woman Tami Spangler found herself unexpectedly channeling her grade-school survival instincts when a marauding trash can panda — aka a raccoon — attacked her while she was putting out the garbage early Tuesday morning.
“I was just minding my own business, walking down the driveway when I heard this rustling behind me,” Spangler recalled. “I turned around, and there it was—huge beady eyes, fur matted from the night’s scavenge. I froze, but then I remembered something from third grade about playing dead to avoid predators.”
Without missing a beat, Spangler dropped to the ground and lay perfectly still, arms splayed like a dead possum. The raccoon, puzzled but not easily deterred, circled for a moment before deciding she wasn’t worth the trouble. It huffed, pawed at the trash can for a bit, and then scurried off into the bushes.
It wasn’t until later, reflecting on her heroic deed, that Spangler realized she had actually learned the "play dead" tactic for avoiding bears—not raccoons.
“Honestly, I’m just glad it worked,” Spangler laughed. “I guess I had no idea the lessons would be so cross-species applicable!”
Local experts recommend using a similar tactic for future raccoon encounters, though they also suggest investing in a solid trash can with a lock.
In the end, Spangler emerged unscathed, proving that sometimes, childhood survival skills can save the day—even if they’re intended for entirely different predators.
Stay safe, and remember: when in doubt, play possum.

🐊 RETRO FLORIDA
Hampton Springs Hotel Ruins 🏨
The story of the Hampton Springs Hotel begins with Joe Hamilton, an early Taylor County resident, who discovered a sulphur-rich spring while guided by local Indians. When the spring water eased his wife’s rheumatism, he bought the land. In 1879, Benjamin W. and Joseph L. Hampton purchased nearby land and formed the Hampton Springs Hotel and Mineral Company. By 1908, the hotel’s first two-story section was completed, expanding in 1915 after businessman J.W. Oglesby joined.
The hotel’s sulphur baths gained fame for their healing properties, and the resort grew to include fountains, gardens, a covered pool, golf and tennis courts, and a casino. The hotel also had a bottling plant for the spring water and a private hunting lodge.
Sadly, the hotel burned down in 1954, and the area was abandoned. Today, ruins of the hotel, including a pool fed by spring water, remain. Visitors can enjoy picnic tables and nature trails at the site, which once hosted one of Florida’s premier health resorts.
Located near Perry, Florida, the ruins stand as a reminder of a time when mineral springs and warm climates drew people to Florida in search of health and relaxation.

🌐 AROUND THE INTERWEBS
Brave Flight Attendant, Neerja Bhanot, Saves Many ✈️
Neerja Bhanot was an Indian flight attendant who displayed immense bravery during a hijacking on Pan Am Flight 73 in 1986. She hid the passports of American passengers to protect them from the hijackers, as they targeted U.S. citizens. In the midst of the hijacking, Neerja shielded three children from a hail of bullets and tragically lost her life.
Posthumously, Bhanot became the first female recipient and, until 2003, the youngest recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award of India. She also received the Tamgha-e-Pakistan, the 4th highest civilian award of Pakistan, in addition to several accolades from the United States.[2][3] Her life and humanitarian actions inspired the 2016 Indian Hindi-language biographical film Neerja, directed by Ram Madhvani and starring actress Sonam Kapoo

Ruins of Hampton Springs 🚰
The ruins of the hotel, including the swimming pool, pathways, and a goldfish pond still remain. Taylor County renovated the site as a park. Picnic tables, a walking bridge over the river, parking, and fencing have been added. In 2018, the historic pool was filled in citing liability and vandalism as reasons.
Recent News seen by local residents that still used these pools to swim and spent time keeping them maintained for use the county was ordered to reverse the fill and return them to the original condition so they may continue to be used for swimming and sightseeing.
