NEWS BITES
Developer behind the Cascades project in Seminole Woods is preparing to sue Palm Coast 👩🏾⚖️
The developer behind the Cascades project in Seminole Woods is preparing to sue Palm Coast over a decision that reduced the proposed development from 850 homes to just 416. The Palm Coast City Council received notice from Byrndog PCP LC, the developer, that it may seek damages exceeding $12 million due to the council's decision, which the developer claims infringes on its property rights.
Under Florida’s Bert Harris Act, developers can request compensation if they believe government actions have unfairly impacted their development plans. The claim was filed to give the city a chance to negotiate before any lawsuit is filed.
A year ago, the city council voted 3-1 to approve a plan for 416 single-family homes on a 375-acre site near the south end of Seminole Woods Boulevard. This approval was a drastic reduction from the 850 units originally proposed, which included apartments. The council had initially approved all 850 units in a 4-1 vote just two months earlier, but backlash against the apartment component—particularly concerns about its proximity to single-family neighborhoods—led to a change in the plan.
Flagler Palm Coast's Evana Fretterd Selected as Finalist in $40,000 Classroom Furniture Giveaway. 🏆
Evana Fretterd, Activities Director at Flagler Palm Coast High School, has been named a finalist in the KI Furniture Solutions’ Classroom Furniture Giveaway contest. Fretterd is one of 12 finalists chosen from over 500 submissions from K-12 educators across the nation, all of whom shared their designs for an ideal classroom.
Her design features flexible seating arrangements, additional storage for supplies, and collaborative display areas aimed at enhancing the learning environment for students.
The contest will award four grand prizes — three to classrooms from different geographic regions and one for school libraries — each receiving $40,000 in furniture to bring these designs to life.
The winners will be selected through a public vote, which is open until Sunday, Nov. 17. The winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Fretterd's design is one of the top three finalists in the Eastern Region.
Mike Norris Elected Palm Coast Mayor, Ty Miller and Ray Stevens Win Council Seats, Debt Amendment Fails 🗳️
Mike Norris has been elected as Palm Coast’s new mayor, securing a comfortable victory over Cornelia Manfre. In the city council races, Ty Miller triumphed over Jeff Seib with a commanding win, and Ray Stevens defeated Andrew Werner in a surprising upset.
In a major setback for the current council, a referendum to expand the city's debt and leasing authority was decisively rejected by voters, losing by a 17-point margin. This defeat adds to the challenges faced by the council, already impacted by term limits and election losses.
With nearly all votes counted, Norris led by 63% to Manfre's 47%, Miller garnered 70% of the vote, and Stevens won by 58%, surprising many given Werner’s strong lead in the primary race, which Stevens had barely advanced from.
In other local elections, Flagler County voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights, with only 51% in favor, falling short of the 60% threshold needed to pass. However, a proposal to legalize recreational marijuana gained strong local support, passing with 68% approval, though it only had 56% approval statewide with over 10 million votes counted.
Alan Lowe Withdraws Lawsuit Against Palm Coast Following Defeat of Debt Referendum 📜
Alan Lowe, the former mayoral candidate who had filed a lawsuit against the Palm Coast City Council over a proposed referendum to ease the city's borrowing and leasing restrictions, dropped the case the day after the Nov. 5 election. The ballot measure, which sought to repeal certain financial limits in the city charter, was decisively defeated by voters.
The referendum asked whether the city should remove a charter provision that requires voter approval for borrowing more than $15 million (outside of utility and stormwater funds) or entering into leases longer than three years. The measure aimed to repeal this requirement, allowing the city more flexibility in borrowing and leasing.
Voters rejected the proposal by a 58% margin.
With the election results rendering the lawsuit largely irrelevant, Lowe's legal challenge had focused on the wording of the ballot measure. His attorney, Jay Livingston, argued that the ballot language was misleading and failed to clearly inform voters that the proposal would remove their right to approve large loans and leases. Specifically, the lawsuit claimed that the language did not adequately explain the implications of the change, leaving voters unaware of what they were truly voting on.

GRINDS MY GEARS
“Lately I’ve been noticing the harsh coldness of supposedly well-meaning people launching so-called “tough love” at me when I’m distressed, rather than actual empathic love. It’s always an avoidance tactic because what I’m feeling is making them uncomfortable about their unresolved emotional baggage, but that doesn’t help me any when I’m upset. It just really grinds my gears.!!” - anonymous. 📣

FROM AROUND THE INTERWEBS
2 adorable pygmy hippos pitted against each other in cuteness contest 🦛
The Edinburgh Zoo launched a cuteness contest between Haggis, its newborn pygmy hippo, and Moo Deng, the adorable mini hippopotamus that became a viral sensation at a Thailand zoo this summer.
“Moo Deng? Who deng?” the Scottish zoo playfully posted Monday on the social media platform X as it introduced its infant hippo to the world.
The smack talk pitted two critters with more in common than just being females calves of the same endangered species. They’re also named for meat products that don’t typically carry cute connotations.
Haggis, the national dish of Scotland that is butt of many jokes, is made in a sheep’s stomach filled with spiced and diced innards. Moo deng is a type of meatball that means “bouncy pork” in Thai.

NEWS of THE WEIRD
What a Load of Bologna! 🥪
U.S Customs and Border Protection shuts down smuggling attempts on a daily basis, but what its officers caught at the Presidio, Texas, port of entry wasn't the usual contraband. While inspecting a vehicle being driven into the U.S., CBP personnel discovered 748 pounds of Mexican bologna. The New York Post reported that 40 rolls of the deli meat were hidden in a number of suitcases throughout the vehicle. CBP Presidio Port Director Benito Reyes Jr. said in a news release that "the concern with pork products is that they have the potential to introduce foreign animal diseases that can have devastating effects to the U.S. economy and to our agriculture industry."
