NEWS BITES

Stormwater awareness week in Palm Coast 🌧️

Palm Coast has officially designated September 23-27, 2024, as Stormwater Awareness Week, a proclamation announced during the City Council meeting on September 17. This initiative underscores the city's dedication to stormwater management and its effects on local water supply.

To bolster its stormwater system, the Stormwater and Engineering Department introduced a pilot program in June 2024 aimed at improving swale maintenance across the community. The program focuses on addressing specific problem areas by selectively regrading and resodding elevated sections of swales, providing effective solutions without the need for major renovations. This initiative reflects the city's ongoing efforts to enhance vital infrastructure. More Info: https://www.palmcoast.gov/stormwater/stormwater-101

Sally Hunt (School Board Member) Resigns 🚌

Sally Hunt has resigned from the Flagler County School Board, sending her resignation letter to Board Chair Will Furry at 1:35 p.m. on September 20. Hunt had previously indicated her family’s plans to move out of the district and stated she would resign before her term ends in 2026. Throughout her tenure, she served as a pivotal vote on many issues, including her last vote on September 18 for a mandate requiring electrocardiogram screenings along with physicals for students participating in school sports, band, and JROTC. AdventHealth offers free ECG screenings and physicals annually for Flagler County students, with the new mandate set to commence next school year. In her resignation letter she wrote: "While I have been disheartened by and departing because of the manipulation of truth and the lies that continue to be shared and accepted regarding targeted Board members and the District as a whole, I am so proud of what the Board has accomplished in just under two years."

Palm Coast Lanes Raises Money For Cancer Charity 🎗️

Mark and Theresa Mistie hosted the “Let’s Boogie For a Cure” ’70s Disco Party at Palm Coast Lanes on September 14. The event drew hundreds of residents affected by cancer and supported the Live Like Cameron charity. Local businesses donated raffle prizes, including a two-night stay at Hammock Beach Resort and a golf outing for four at Grand Haven, while BJ’s Wholesale Club organized a membership drive to raise funds. https://livelikecameron.org/

Injunction filed to remove a charter amendment on city’s borrowing 💵

Alan a candidate defeated in the August primary for Palm Coast mayor, has filed a lawsuit against the city and the Supervisor of Elections to remove a charter amendment from the November ballot. The amendment aims to eliminate limits on the city's borrowing and leasing capabilities, with Lowe arguing that its wording is misleading.

This concern has also been expressed by two sitting council members, the other mayoral candidates, and some council candidates. The lawsuit contends that the ballot summary does not adequately disclose that the amendment's main purpose is to revoke citizens' right to approve fiscal limitations through a referendum, effectively granting the city unrestricted authority.

Lowe is seeking an injunction in Flagler County court to block the amendment from appearing on the November 5 ballot.
