Sailboat Runs a Ground! ⛵

On Tuesday, October 29, at 2:30 p.m., FCFR Engine 41 and Marine Rescue 41, (Station 41 - Hammock) were dispatched for a 32-foot sailboat trapped in the surf with one person still on board. FCFR units rapidly deployed trained rescue swimmer's to the boat, and were able to safely remove one adult male from the boat and safely back to the beach. Shortly after this took place, the boat was caught up in the waves and eventually ran aground in the area of Sea Colony. There were no reported civilian or firefighter injuries.

A Second Chick-fil-A is Set to Open in Palm Coast, Situated on State Road 100 Within the BJ’s Wholesale Shopping Plaza. 🐔

As detailed in a site plan submitted to the city, this new Chick-fil-A will cover nearly 5,000 square feet, featuring seating for 70 patrons indoors and 16 additional seats outdoors. The plan also includes 69 parking spaces and a two-lane drive-thru that wraps around the building and extends to the east side of the lot.

Currently, the developer has not yet initiated the permitting process with the Palm Coast planning department.

Hurricane Milton Damages to Dixie Highway in Flagler County. 🌪️

The Dixie Highway, which we now call the old brick road, ceased to be a major roadway, when the New Dixie Highway, named by the State as State Road 4 (now U.S. 1), was opened on 01 Dec 1927 offering a direct route south from St. Augustine to Bunnell, to Korona and on south to Ormond.

Early county developer Isaac I. Moody, Jr., was elected President of the Board of County Commissioners for St Johns County in 1912. Newspaper accounts show that in Apr 1913 he was in St Augustine with his wife to hear a speech by William Jennings Bryan. They then left for Washington, DC where they attended the Good Roads Convention. 

In Apr 1914, Isaac was pleased to announce that St Johns County voters had approved a $650,000 Bond Issue for a new highway to be made of vitrified brick. Soon thereafter work in present-day Flagler County started from the Bunnell State Bank and proceeded in two directions, one crew working east to Ocean City and one crew working north towards Espanola. The highway was to become a part of the Dixie Highway, a small network of interconnected paved roads, rather than a single highway that connected the Midwest with the southern United States.

New Historical Marker Placed At Long Creek Park 📜

Congratulations to Elaine Studnicki, the Palm Coast Historical Society, and the City of Palm Coast! Last month all of the above unveiled a brand new history marker for Flagler County. Located in Long Creek Park, on Palm Harbor Parkway just east of Florida Park Drive, the site was once the location of Hernandez Landing—a major distribution point for crops, goods, and sundries that were produced in what is now Flagler County. These products were shipped by boat to St. Augustine, and overseas to Europe.

Flagler County Can Expect Low-Flying Aircraft to Spray for Mosquitoes in Response to the Surge 🦟

Starting November 2, residents of Flagler County can expect low-flying aircraft to spray for mosquitoes in response to the surge in their population following Hurricane Milton. One or two Beechcraft King Air turboprop planes will operate at an altitude of just 300 feet as they disperse pesticides across the area. This effort is funded by state emergency resources and the planes are contracted through the state, rather than through the East Flagler Mosquito Control District.

The spraying is scheduled to commence on Saturday evening and will continue nightly from dusk until dawn, concluding on November 6. Residents should anticipate significant noise from the aircraft. Maerk Positano, director of the district, noted that there may be one or two planes operating simultaneously, but typically no more than two at a time.

The pesticides will be applied at an “ultra-low volume,” with rates of less than an ounce per acre, using the same products employed by the local mosquito control district. Positano estimates that the cost of the pesticides used by the state will be around half a million dollars.

Trash from a North Korean balloon landed on the presidential compound in central Seoul on Thursday, according to South Korean officials.

This incident marks the second occurrence since North Korea resumed sending balloons filled with trash toward South Korea in late May, reminiscent of Cold War-era psychological tactics.

The presidential security service in South Korea reported that the debris that fell on the compound posed no safety risk.
