NEWS BITES
Flagler Schools Adjust Calendar After Hurricane Cancellations 📚
Flagler County schools will only add back one instructional day this year, forfeiting four days lost due to hurricanes while keeping Thanksgiving and winter breaks intact. Assuming no additional storms or emergencies arise, the district will still comply with the state’s required number of instructional days.
To accommodate this, the end of the first quarter has been rescheduled to October 18. The second quarter will now run from October 21 to January 10, ensuring that it concludes before the Christmas break. This quarter will consist of 42 days, which, combined with the first quarter's 43 days, meets the required 85 days.
The start of the third quarter will shift to January 13, moving it back from the original start date of January 7. The fourth quarter remains unchanged, with the school year still concluding for students on May 29. In total, students will have 175 instructional days instead of the usual 179.
Palm Coast Under State Mandate to Enhance Sewer Capacity by 2028; Rate Hikes Likely Ahead 💩
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection has issued a consent decree mandating Palm Coast to upgrade and expand one of its two sewage treatment plants by 2028. This order comes as the city's sewer system struggles with overcapacity and significant strain. Meeting the requirements outlined in the decree is expected to be costly, with estimates reaching around $200 million. While some funding may come from development impact fees, a significant portion will fall on current ratepayers. The City Council will have limited options moving forward, especially with the decree imposing strict compliance.
Palm Coast Claims Limited Control Over Burn Piles from Development Clearances, Plans to Consult Attorney General 🔥
Palm Coast asserts that it cannot manage burn piles resulting from land cleared for development due to conflicting regulations. The city has an ordinance that grants it the power to regulate burning activities; however, state law designates this authority solely to the Florida Forest Service. Instead of implementing a new ordinance at this time, the Palm Coast City Council has decided to request an opinion from the Attorney General to clarify the city's regulatory options within the legal framework.
Fire Station 22 to Be Preserved as a Historic Structure, New Community Center Parking Planned. 🚒
The Palm Coast City Council approved a $3.3 million initiative on Tuesday aimed at preserving the historic Fire Station 22. According to city architect Eric Gebo, the plan focuses on "adaptively reusing the building for various functions." Alongside this, 90 additional parking spaces will be created to accommodate overflow for the adjacent Community Center. Currently, the 138 parking spaces at the center are often inadequate, leading to an average of seven meetings a month being turned away due to capacity issues.
City Repertory Theatre Launches New Concert Series with Laniece Fagundes on Oct. 18 🎙️
City Repertory Theatre is set to kick off its new concert series on October 18 with "An Evening with Laniece Fagundes." This long-time CRT performer will showcase a mix of Broadway hits, popular songs, and her original compositions. The theatre, located at 160 Cypress Point Parkway, Suite B207, in Palm Coast, features a cozy 50-seat venue that allows audiences to connect closely with the artists from the theater and the local community.
The inaugural concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Fagundes, who has been part of CRT since its inception. She will be accompanied by CRT Music Director Benjamin Beck and drummer Denise Elisha, highlighting how her experiences in theater have shaped her as both a performer and composer.
Performing under the name Laniece Rose, Fagundes writes and records her own music and is currently working on a new album with her band, “The Wildflowers.”

FROM AROUND THE INTERWEBS
“Spoon Theory, is now part of the lingo for autoimmune disease. People call themselves Spoonies for their way to explain their chronic disease limited daily energy levels and plan days around the number of spoons they have when they wake up. The idea is each spoon represents the amount of energy needed to complete a task.”
The theory uses spoons as a unit of energy, with each spoon representing a finite amount of energy that can be spent on tasks. People with chronic conditions have a limited number of spoons, and must ration them throughout the day. The number of spoons needed to complete a task can vary from day to day, and depends on the person, their condition, and the task.

NEWS of THE WEIRD
Curfew Be Damned for Birthday Ciggies 🚓
A local man drove around, on his birthday, in search of cigarettes during a curfew imposed due to hurricane conditions.
The Sheriff’s Office had instituted an overnight curfew following the storm. A deputy on patrol noticed a vehicle making several U-turns in the intersection just before midnight, well past the curfew hour.
When stopped, the man explained to the deputy that it was his birthday and he was looking for an open store to buy cigarettes. However, the deputy observed that the man’s speech was slurred and his eyes appeared red and dilated. After requesting the man to exit the vehicle and conducting a sobriety test, the deputy placed him under arrest. The man later acknowledged consuming marijuana edibles prior to driving.
